China is the largest operational emissions trading market in the world. The country's ETS launched in July 2021, and as of 2024 covered around ***** billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCO₂). This accounted for just over 40 percent of China's annual CO₂ emissions that year. Meanwhile. the European Union ETS, which became the world's first ETS in 2005, covered around *** GtCO₂e as of 2026.
