Self-Checkout
Self-Checkout Popular Across U.S. Age Groups
A Statista Consumer Insights survey from May 2026 reveals that 31 percent of U.S. respondents between the ages of 18 and 64 always choose self-checkout lanes in grocery stores to save time. This figure is slightly higher among younger Americans, but self-checkout is proving popular among all U.S. age groups in the survey.
In the United Kingdom, self-checkout was even more popular at 39 percent saying they always used it to save time and age groups varying between 35 percent and 40 percent. In Germany, consumers remain more hesitant about the payment method. As the use of self-checkout is still less widespread in the country, consumers haven’t warmed up to it. Especially older Germans are not fans of self-checkout, with only 16 percent in their forties and 11 in their fifties and early sixties saying they would always use the time-saving measure at the grocery store.
