Smartphone Wishlist: It's All About the Battery Life

Over the past few years, smartphone improvements have become increasingly incremental with recent launches mostly improving cameras, screens and battery tech rather than introducing genuinely new features. The only notable break in that pattern has been the emergence of on-device AI features that promise smarter assistants and easy-to-use creative tools. However, even those features are not yet the gamechangers that marketing would suggest.

When asked by Statista Consumer Insights what matters most to U.S. smartphone users, the top answers are bluntly practical: 61 percent name battery life as a top criterion, followed by fast charging (51 percent) and camera quality (50 percent). Storage, durability and 5G also rank highly, showing people still prioritize everyday performance and connectivity over eye-catching gimmicks or brand reputation.

For smartphone makers, the data implies clear priorities: meaningful battery and charging improvements as well as noticeable camera gains and sensible storage options will win more users over than glossy AI demos. Pairing hardware upgrades that improve reliability with AI features that solve real user problems is the best way to success in today’s smartphone landscape.
