The Countries Pulling Their Weight in Ukraine Aid

While not directly participating in the war in Ukraine, countries around the world have been contributing to the defence of the nation via financial, humanitarian and military aid. In absolute terms, the largest supporter as of June 30 was the United States, with a total of $133 billion allocated, while EU institutions are catching up at $110 billion since the U.S. ceased support under the Trump administration.

As seen in data by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy's Ukraine Support Tracker, other country's commitments are larger in relative terms. The U.S. doesn't come close to Denmark, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania when counting aid as a share of GDP. Denmark's contribution of $13.5 billion equals more than 4 percent of the country's 2021 GDP. The United States' input up to this point is equivalent to just 0.6 percent of its economic output. For Baltic nations, the relative aid share is almost as high as Denmark's at 2.8 to 3.7 percent of 2021 GDP, followed by Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands and Poland.
